one designation: E-9. It is the only paygrade in the lineup called by its grade rather than its title —
because no single title captures what this rank means across every branch.
The E-9 is the highest rank an enlisted member can achieve. They have the commander's ear. They know
more about the unit than the company commander. The Captain has the authority. The Sergeant Major has
the knowledge, the network, and twenty-plus years of hard-earned credibility behind every word.
